From Me To You Wood Works
My name is Elijah Breece, I am a 17 year old wood worker constantly challenging myself with new projects to further diversify my business and sharpen my skills. I have always had a love for doing projects with wood ever since I was young. My Mom had taught us to do a lot of things from a young age such as gardening, raising farm animals, spinning, knitting, crocheting, making soap and a whole lot more. By the age of 8 I was already doing trade shows and selling my goods such as cards, soap, scarfs, stitch markers and bath bombs, some of which I still make today. My first lathe I got was when I was about 9 years old, although it was a toy lathe I still was able to get quite a lot of use out of it and I was able to try my hand at creating new things. When I was 13 years old, my Dad got me a mini lathe; some of my first turnings I made were mushrooms, bats, and some short table legs. I later tried crochet hooks, drop spindles and small bowls, which I got a very good response from when I sold a few crochet hooks at an event. People were shocked I didn’t start out with a dowel, (including the professional crochet hook maker in the booth next to us) but instead a piece of walnut fire wood I had received from someone local. When I was 14 years old my Grandpa and Grandma gave me a new set of tools for my birthday. I had been using the old ones from my Dad’s Shop Smith and did not know yet how to sharpen them. Later that year, on December 9th 2015 at 3:00 am in the morning a HUGE tree fell on our house, it was about 3 feet in diameter and 60-80 feet tall as it trailed over our house and into our garden. This put me at a stopping point on my wood working as we demolished our old house and were able to bring in a new one over course of about 7 months. With the new FEMA regulations for our new house we had to sadly sell all the animals we had on our just over 4.5 acre homestead; we had goats, ducks, sheep, rabbits and 2 horses. When the new house was brought in I could finally start to do some more wood working and to my surprise I had gotten a lot better! My Grandpa let me use his bench grinder so I could sharpen my tools, which was a new thing to learn but I quickly got the hang of it. I had moved my shop to 3 different locations and I finally settled in our small 1940’s homesteader cabin in which I am still finding ways to better organize and bring in new tools. The year 2017 has been the first year for me to offer my wood turnings & creations at local trade shows & shops after our long hiatus.
I have had amazing responses and was inundated with custom orders from one event to the next finally finishing my last order in August of 2017. I now offer a whole range of new products and I am still making new things to offer. I turn pens, seam rippers, seam pressers, bowls of many designs, drop spindles, acorn capsules, baby rattles, wood buttons, shawl pins, crochet hooks, bracelets, spoons, sock darners, and the list goes on. I also consider commissions if there is anything you need that you don’t see already.
You can check out my gallery here and you can also check out my workshop here to see the creations I've done and how I did them.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about my journey and process.
